Cultivate Conversational Intelligence®

Your leadership and collaborative success rides on the quality of your conversations.

Why? Because conversations create everything. Conversations are not simply a way of sharing information. Conversations trigger somatic responses that impact what and how we experience and express our reality. C-IQ - shorthand for “Conversational Intelligence®” - can transform what is possible in conversation and your capacity to co-create meaningful results with other people. Our C-IQ is at play every day and is a source of considerable power.

C-IQ is based on the neuroscience of conversation. C-IQ is the next generation of “intelligences” that enables individuals to build trust more quickly, relate more effectively and connect more deeply.

As a member of the first cohort Certified Conversational Intelligence® Coaches, I look forward to introducing C-IQ’s concepts, tools and exercises to benefit you and your organization.

What difference would it make if you could effectively raise your C-IQ?

Whether your business has 2 partners or 2,000 employees, conversational dynamics are similar. Conversational mastery is essential for businesses (and their people!) to thrive. You move from I-centric to WE-centric leadership. You move from protective (and possibly toxic) behaviors and practices to those that promote innovation and vibrant partnership.

C-IQ tools are research-based conversational catalysts. Used with individuals or groups, they enhance your understanding of specific and critical conversational dynamics and help you gain conversational mastery:

Build & Restore Trust

Trust is the foundation of positive relationships and is vital to leadership and collaborative excellence.

Since 2001 a central pillar of my practice for developing leadership and collaborative excellence has been the building and restoring trust. Two of the most pragmatic, actionable and sufficiently in-depth frameworks (and related tools) that I have found are
  • Conversational Intelligence®
  • The Reina Trust and Betrayal Model®.
I use these, selectively weaving in further frameworks and practices from a variety of approaches, e.g. somatics, ontology, and neuroscience.

The Reina Trust and Betrayal Model® distinguishes types of trust, types of betrayal and steps for healing from betrayal.

In the best places to work, people cultivate high levels of trust.

Trust-based leadership promotes flexible, adaptive and productive work environments. Even so, business leaders are often faced with the task of (re)building trust in organizations without the support, tools or explicit understanding and practices necessary to work with complex dynamics of trust and the consequences of betrayal. Deeper appreciation of real, complex and persistent dynamics is often missing. Well-intentioned, capable people can get very cynical about patterns that resist change. Knowing what to do is necessary but insufficient. The possibility of real change becomes realistic when you courageously take responsibility for making the shifts you need.

What could a trust upgrade mean for you now?

The quality of business depends upon the quality of its culture, which depends upon the quality of its relationships, which depends upon the quality of the conversations that build them.

[T]he most effective and fastest business organizations are those which understand how to mobilize the power of trust-based relationships in the workplace; it is a matter of focus, awareness and systems of structure and reinforcement. …How we create speed distinguishes the winners.

When leaders honor us with opportunities to know the truth of what is occurring and support us to explore the deeper meaning of events, we instinctively reach out to them.

Collaborative relationships are valuable to an organization not only because they produce better processes and better results, but also because they increase the amount of discretionary emotional energy that employees will devote to the organizational effort. Discretionary emotional energy is a term … to describe the passion, excitement, enthusiasm, and dedication that individuals choose to give freely to those causes, projects, relationships, and organizations in which they truly believe. Discretionary emotional energy cannot be mandated, and attempts to do so will inevitably lead to either outright rebellion or passive-aggressive undermining behavior. It is personal buy-in that can’t be bought.
